IBMDC Minimum Requirements for Breeders
  1. Breed only stock which is registered by the AKC, CKC, KC, Austr. KC, NZKC, or a FCI affiliated club.
  2. All puppies produced are eligible for registration by the body to which the dam is registered.
  3. A bitch is not bred to produce more than 2 litters in 3 heat cycles.
  4. Breed only stock which has been certified clear of hip dysplasia at a minimum* one year of age. Elbows should be x-rayed and evaluated. Evaluations and certifications to be issued by the organization(s) recognized for this purpose by the aforementioned registries.
*If initial x-ray is at one year, new radiographs and evaluation at two years or later is desirable.
  5. Make available to potential buyers the following documents: a minimum (3) generation pedigree, copies of sire and dam's: registration, hip certifications, elbow evaluation, and breeding certification (where applicable under rules of the registering body or breed club), any other certifications breeder has stated and a copy of the purchase contract.
  6. Breed only animals that conform to the type, structure, and temperament desirable in a BMD as defined by the breed standard of the registering body.
  7. Plan matings with the dual goals of advancing the breed towards the ideal provided by the standard and eliminating hereditary diseases.
  8. Breeder welcomes potential puppy buyers to meet their dogs and view their facilities. Visits must be prearranged for a mutually convenient time and it is understood that it may not be appropriate to visit when a young litter is on the premises.
  9. Guarantees health of puppy for a minimum of 48 hours after leaving the kennel. Examination and certification of health by a veterinarian prior to leaving the breeder is desirable.
  10. Does not sell puppies or dogs to wholesalers, retailers, or resellers.

Please note that some breeders apply additional criteria when considering a breeding based on the goals of their breeding program and their knowledge of the dogs genetic background. These may include: x-rays taken at a minimum of 2 years of age, periodic CERF (eye exam), periodic thyroid tests, breeding only dogs with a proven show record, et al.

Many breeders provide for/require the return of a dog if the buyer cannot keep it at any time in the dogs life, some guarantee against specific genetic diseases, all specifics should be clearly stated in a contract.

These are all aspects of a breeder's responsibility to the Bernese Mountain Dog and the people who buy their puppies... but this is only one half of the equation. In order to ensure a lifetime of health and happiness for the results of their efforts, the torch of responsibility is passed to the buyer along with that cuddly ball of fluff. There is much to do to raise a well adjusted Berner and keep him out of harm's way. Click here for details of the buyers responsibility and discussion of some aspects of ownership which may be required in the breeders contract.
